Kiddieland Amusement Park To Close After 80 Years

Little Dipper, an ACE Coaster Classic (lapbar, no headrests or seat dividers) will be closing at the end of this season…

Melrose Park Institution Is Among The Last Of Its Kind

MELROSE PARK, Ill. (CBS) ― The iconic Kiddieland Amusement Park in the near west suburbs is closing down after entertaining Chicago area children for over 80 years.

The owners of the amusement park, at 8400 W. North Ave. in Melrose Park, announced on Wednesday morning that the park is shutting down after this season. Rumors of the demise of Kiddieland have been circulating for a decade, but only now did the park owners and the managers of the trust that owns the land decide it was time to call it quits.

Although this is a junior woodie (think Fairly Odd Coaster), it is at a great park and not to be missed.

Diamondback

Diamondback Statistics

Diamondback Logo

Diamondback Logo

  • 5,282’ track length
  • 230’ max. height
  • 215’, 193’, 131’, 129’, 110’, 106’ drops
  • 10 total drops
  • 80 mph top speed
  • Three minutes ride time
  • 1,620 riders per hour
  • 3 trains
  • Bolliger and Mabillard designed
  • $22 million investment

How does Diamondback compare?

  • Diamondback is in the top 20 for height, drop, length and top speed when compared with either all coasters worldwide or just the US.
  • 9th faster coaster in the US – placing it in the 1.20% percentile for US coasters (out of 744)
  • 7th tallest coaster in the US – placing it in the 0.94% percentile for all US coasters
  • 9th tallest drop in the US – placing it in the 1.20% percentile for US coasters

What’s it Like?

Think of it as a combination of Canada’s Wonderland Behemoth and Six Flags Over Georgia’s Goliath with a couple unique elements thrown in.  No, it’s not the tallest or fastest coaster in the world, but as you can see above – it’s right near the top.  Many have said it is the best ride Kings Island has opened since The Beast.  Judging by reaction at Ride Warriors Weekend, this coaster will be in most ACE’rs top ten list.  The line on opening day looped through Nickelodeon Universe, by the Eiffel Tower, back to the Beast and almost wrapped itself back to Diamondbacks entrance.  The park definitely has a winner on it’s hands.

Kings Island is now open Fridays and Saturdays from 10-10 and Sundays from 10-8.  Kings Island Gold and Platinum Passholders, as well as ACE members, get in for early rides every day (Sunday through Friday a half hour, Saturdays an hour) – just show your pass or membership card.

The Amusement Industry is all aTwitter

Twitter?  What is this Twitter I keep hearing about?

Twitter itself describes itself thus:

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Wikipedia goes a little more in depth:

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users’ updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

If you are already Twitter, continue reading, if not you may want to check out the Twitter site first.

Although Twitter has been around a couple years, 2009 has brought  a huge explosion in use.  Below is a list of Twitter users involved in the amusement industry.  It is hard to keep up with all of the new accounts, so this list is as complete as it can be when this article was published.  If you know of any Twitter accounts not listed below that should be, please let me know.

Summer Con Information Updates

For those attending Coaster Con XXXII this June in Missouri, this Saturday May 9th is the last day to book hotels for that. There is still some time left to register for the event itself.

For anyone intersted in attending ACEspana, that deadline for registration has been extended to May 15th, due to the late arrivals of the recent ACE News Magazines. That flyer can be found at

Other events and information will be announced as we get it.  Our SOAR region is currently planning a summer event in Columbus. Details for that will be released in the next 2 weeks.
